This Sherman M4A3 (76W) tank was apart of the US Marines 5th Division that landed at the base of Mount Suribachi of Iwo Jima in 1945. In total 23 tanks underwent operations in Iwo Jima in mostly unfavorable conditions.
To improve armour characteristics of the Sherman tanks soldiers would often attach wooden side armour plates. This was commonly seen by the tank company's involved in the attacks of Iwo Jima
