In late 1941, the British 1st Airborne Division was established under the request of Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Their first mission, dubbed "Operation Biting", was conducted in early 1942.
This daring operation aimed to assault and capture an important German radar station on the northern coast of France, believed to be responsible for the high number of downed RAF bombers. Thanks to the success of the mission, the German garrison was defeated, crucial military technology was seized, and minimal casualties were sustained by the 1st Airborne Division.
