Soviet T-62 Main Battle Tank (MBT)
First introduced in 1961 the Soviet T-62 MBT was a natural development to the T-55 series tank. This meant that the T-62 retained the low profile and thick turrets armour characteristics of the T-55.
What was unique about the T-62 was its first in the world Smoothbore cannon that could fire high velocity APFSDS rounds.
The baptism by fire of this tank came in the 1973 Yom Kippur war between Israel and several Arab states. The T-62 tank proved to be a worthy opponent against Israeli Centurions and Patton tanks due to its superior night hunting mode abilities.
Israeli commandos eventually raided Egyptian tank storage facilities and captured many T-62 for analysis, which helped in developing the 120mm gun on the Leopard 2 after some T-62s were sent to the USA and Germany
