The "Screaming Eagles" as they are affectionally referred to are an elite high mobility unit that performed extremely effectively during WW2 even when deployed deep behind enemy lines with limited fire support.
The "Filthy Thirteen" of the 506th Parachute regiment of the 101st AB division with blatant disregard for military discipline and flashy style were a demolition unit to be used to destroy bridges or enemy fortifications although in some instances they were ordered to secure and reinforce bridges in order to allow other allied units to cross deeper in German occupied territories.
