In the mid 1870s the British empire was in desperate need of extending its influence across South Africa. The catalyst for the push came with the discovery of diamonds in the Kimberly region.
As a result of this and other factors coming into play Lord Carnarvon along with other British Lords and generals organised a Casus Belli against the South African Zulu Kingdom.
In January 1879 the British army flooded the region with over 16000 royal British soldiers and in the space of 5 months had annexed the Zulu kingdom whilst suffering over 2000 casualties.
