The Japanese 2nd infantry division code name "tsūshōgō" for courage is one of the oldest Imperial Japanese army divisions. Its early operations in China along with other IJA divisions were crucial in pacifying Chinese resistance.

With the onset of WW2 and the Pacific war the division was placed under the command of Field Marshal Terauchi Hisaichi and moved to occupy the Dutch East Indies. They were heavily involved in assaulting the port of Merak in Western Java which lead to the surrender of Dutch forces in the area.

In late 1942 the 2nd infantry division of the IJA suffered crippling casualties when fighting against US marines on the Solomon islands it would render the 2nd infantry division useless as a fighting force.
