First established in the 1960s to deal with riot control and bank robberies the scope of S.W.A.T greatly expanded in the 1980s and 1990s to deal with the war on drugs then further after 9/11 to deal with terrorism related offences. S.W.AT teams in the USA alone are called upon almost 50000 times every year.
They are mostly equipped with specialised military grade weaponry and equipment in order to tackle situations that are beyond the capabilities of ordinary law enforcement teams.
