Entering service in the mid 1960s the AMX-30B replaced the American M47 Tank which had been in service with the French while they developed a domestic tank.
By 1980 the AMX-30B2 standard was developed which improved the Fire Control System of the tank giving it an adavnced laser rangefinder and thermal camera to pair with the 105 mm modèle F1 gun that was also recieving newer high-velocity APFSDS tungsten penetrator rounds.
In total over 3000 such tanks have been produced and even exported to several countries.
