The IS-2 first entered service with the elite Guards Heavy Tank Regiment of the Red Army in 1944. It was intended as a break through tank due to its thick 10mm frontal armour and powerful D25-T 122 mm gun.
The powerful IS-2m named after Stalin himself saw extensive used during the Battle of Berlin where the tanks where used to raise buildings and fortifications from point blank range.
