The CH-47 entered service with the US Army in 1962 and replaced the piston powerd CH-37 Mojave. With its two Lycoming T55 turboshaft engines the CH-47 could operate as a heavy lift helicopter capable of transporting 3 to 4 tons of cargo.
Additionally it was capable of transporting heavy artillery pieces and light vehicles. This has been demonstrated in the Vietnam wat and Middle Eastern conflicts.
Over 1200 derivatives of the Chinook have been produced with most of them serving in the US Army and UKs Royal AirForce.
