Affectionately endeared as the "Swallow" the Messerschmitt Me 262 was the first operational jet fighter in the world coming into service in mid 1944 with the German Luftwaffe. 

With a top speed of 950km/h due to the power of x2 Junkers Jumo 004B-1 turbojet engine the Me 262 excelled in air superiority missions against piston powered planes. It is credited with the shoot down of 542 allied planes.

The Me 262 was armed with 4 × 30 mm MK 108 cannons and later models could carry 24 × 55 mm (2.2 in) R4M rockets for bomber targetting. It was additionally capable of carrying unguided bombs for ground attack missions.

In total over 1400 were built in what as ultimately a case of to little to late.
