An elite division consisting of mostly ethnic Bavarians and Austrians the 1st Mountain Division Gebirgsjäger and its specialised mountain troops took part in numerous successful operations in the east.
Under the command of Walter Stettner Ritter von Grabenhofen, they captured the Ukrainian city of Lvov, participated in the second battle of Kharkov and raised the German flag on Mount Elbrus the highest mountain peak in the Caucasus.
