The Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) was formed in 1868 and served as the official ground force of the Japanese empire until 1945.

Pre WW2 the IJA thought many decisive victories including the first Sino-Japanese wars and the Russo-Japanese wars which thwarted Russian ambitions around the land masses of Korea and Manchuria.

By the time WW2 had reached its conclusion the IJA was still 5 million strong despite suffering over 2 million casualties across the South-East Asia and the pacific.
