The BT-7 was a Soviet cavalry tank with light armor, mass-produced before World War II and commonly used in infantry divisions. It had an average frontal armor thickness of 30mm and was equipped with either a 76mm short-barreled gun or a 45mm high-velocity gun designed for anti-tank duties.

During Operation Barbarossa, the tank's infantry support role was highlighted as over 2000 of them were lost to the powerful German tank divisions in the first year of the operation. Despite this setback, the tank remained in service with the Soviet Red Army, albeit in smaller quantities.
