Following the intense urban combat of the Battle of Stalingrad, the German high command prioritized the development of assault tanks designed to deliver powerful fire support to infantry in city environments. In 1943, the Sturmmörserwagen 606/4 mit 38 cm RW 61, known as the "Sturmtiger," was introduced. Armed with a 380mm cannon, it could obliterate fortified structures and enemy troop concentrations. 

By the end of World War II, 18 units had been produced, with significant deployment during the Warsaw Uprising to suppress Polish resistance within the city.
