The Bf 109E, "Emil", was introduced in 1939, it was powered by a 1,100 Hp DB 601A engine, allowing it to reach speeds up to 355 mph. The armament included 2 × 7.92 mm MG17 machine guns and 20 mm MG FF cannons.

It featured a streamlined all-metal design, and excellent agility, which excelled it in dogfights. It played a key role in the Battle of Britain and early WWII campaigns, before being replaced by later models like the Bf 109F and G.
