The very popular M-30 howitzer was the number one choice for the Soviet army to equip its fledgling howitzer battalions.
The M-30 was mostly used in indirect roles to target enemy gathering or fortifications thus HE-Fragmentation shells were almost the exclusive shell type supplied to artillery regiments. It wasn't till 1943 that a HEAT shell was developed for the M-30 in order to combat flanking German assault tanks.
