The F-14 Tomcat entered service with the United States Navy (USN) in 1974. The variable-sweep wing fighter was developed in order to counter Soviet MiG fighters and thus the F-14 served as air superiority fighter and fleet interceptor.
In order to keep the fighter competitive in the 90s the US miliatary undertook a partial modernisation of the plance which gave it a new GE engine, newer AN/APG-71 radar and an upgraded electronic suite such as IRST for infrared tracking of targerts.
Interestingly the only nation to operate the F-14 Tomcat currently is Iran.
