The island of Iwo Jima was assault by the USMC and United States Navy mid Feburary 1945 in an effort to capture airfields and establish American presence near the Japanese home islands.
The effort was costly and lead to over 27000 casulties amongst US personal as a result of Japanese fortification efforts which created networks of bunkers, caves and hidden artillery zones within the mountain complex of the Island. The campaign was concluded with the raising of the U.S. flag at the top of Mount Suribachi.
