USS Constitution Naval Frigate
The USS Constitution Naval frigate was commissioned 1797 for a very special reason. It was intended to combat Barbary pirates that for the best part of a decade had been harassing American merchant shipping around the Mederterrian coast.
The frigate immediately saw combat at the turn of the century when it engaged the Barbary pirates along the coasts off Tripoli, Algiers, and Tunis, the fighting would last for 5 years.
The USS Constitution also provided protection to US Merchant ships during the French Quasi war and was responsible for defeating 5 British war ships during the war of 1812. Its heroic actions during the war against the British is what has given the USS Constitution an inerasable reputation.
