The Russian Aerospace forces (VKS) have been operating Su-27s and various upgraded varients since 1985. The primary purpose the Su-27 "Flanker, NATO desgination" 4th Gen figther was for aerial supremacy and defence of the Soviet coast against American bombing raids.
The Su-27SM is Russian modernisation on the plane featuring improved engines, avionics and addition of Electronic Counter Measure (ECM) systems
The VKS currently operate 100s of different varients of the Su-27.
