During the 6 years of war the British Military had raised around infantry divisions. Each infantry division consisted of 18000 soldiers. These British infantry divisions were dispersed all around the globe from North Africa, South east Asia, Middle East and the European Front.

The British Expeditionary Force (BEF) which consisted of the 1st and 2nd Infantry divisions and had combined troop number in excess of 160000 was the first to see combat against the Germans during the invasion of France.

During the same time British troops of the Somaliland Camel Corps in Somaliland also came under attack from Italian colonial force during the 1940 battle campaigns
