Known as the "Russischer Koloss" (Russian Colosses) in German. The KV series of heavy tanks were capable of single handily stopping large German formations when accompanied by infantry support.

The most famous example of this occurred during the battle of Leningrad in 1941 when a large force of German armour consisting of tanks and artillery from the 8th, 6th and 1st panzer division encountered Lieutenant Kolobanovs 5 well hidden KV-1s at the edge of a swamp.

By the end of the battle a total of 43 German tanks had been destroyed by the 5 KV-1 tanks. In particular Lieutenant Kolobanovs Kv-1 No. 864 had a total of 156 with none of them penetrating.

The 90mm frontal armour of the KV-1 made it practically invulnerable to all German guns except for the 8.8cm Flak gun.
