The SR-71 was a special purpose long-range, Mach 3+, high-altitude, reconnaissance aircraft designed for airial reconnaissance missions.
The SR-71 had stealth capabilites, airborne raders ,SIGNIT capabilites and optical cameras. Due to its ability to reach tremendous speeds the SR-71 was capable of outpacing most AA missiles launched at it. This was evident in Vietnam and Laos during the Vietnam war when over 800 AA missiles were launched without hit success.
The SR-71 was retired in 1988 due to incrteasing increasing repair costs and the rise of other surveillance platforms like UAVS.
