With the unification of Italy in 1861 the Royal Italian army came to fruition. In the decades to follow it grew in strength and ambition.

In the years leading up to the second world war Italian ambitions matched those of their Roman past with the ground army and navy employed various African regions in order to realise the dream of "Mare Nostrum" Our Sea in Latin.

Numbering over 2 million at the onset of WW2 the only decisive victory Italy achieved solo was against the British in British Somaliland by the late stages of WW2 the Italian army had collapsed due to external military setbacks and political strive inside the country.
