WW2 US Marines x 10
During WW2 US Marines were fundamental in assaulting Japanese positions across the entire Pacific front. The United States Marine Corps (USMC) personal were trained and experienced in amphibious operations and military planning this is what made them ideal for operations in the Pacific that involved island hoping and coastal assaults.
The most famous battle for the Marines occurred on 19th February 1945 when they assaulted the well fortified island of Iwo Jima. Despite fanatic and much improved Japanese resistance the island was captured in 4 days and was marked with the raising of the flag on the summit of Mt Suribachi.
The human cost was however great in this battle with over 50000 casualties between both sides in the space of only four days. For their bravery and and tremendous efforts across the pacific dozens of Marines were awarded the prestigious 'Medal of Honour' during WW2.
