PLA HQ-6 Air Defence System
Development of Beyond Visual Range (BVR) systems began an in the early 1980s after the Chinese military requested for a modernisation of its ageing Soviet air defence fleet.
The HQ-6 AA truck is part of a larger family of air defence systems developed by the Shanghai Academy of Science and Technology. The HQ-6 family is influenced by both Italian and American designs. The HQ-6 is intended for short range air defence and is usually incorporated into a larger AD network.
The LY-60 missile launched from the HQ-6 features a 35kg warhead and a maximum 20km range. Despite their early potential in the 20th century they now have been replaced by better point defence SAM systems such as the HQ-7 and HQ-64
